Benjamin Louis Cardin is a Senator from the state of Maryland. He started off his political career in the Maryland House of Delegates, serving from 1967 to 1986. In the Maryland House of Delegates, Cardin was primarily focused on reforming the property tax system and the system for public school financing. Afterward, Cardin served in the United States House of Representatives from 1987 to 2006, during which he became a member of eight different committees and subcommittees. In 2006, Ben Cardin ran for a seat in the United States Senate, beating republican opponent Michael Steele to take the seat. He was more recently re-elected in 2012 without much competition. He is currently an active member of multiple committees and subcommittees in the Senate, and also introduces and sponsors many bills and legislation.
